“The Amazing Digital Circus” is a dark comedy and physiological drama YouTube series created and directed by Gooseworx while produced by Glitch Productions. The series is set in the 1990s and follows Pomni, the latest human trapped in a digital circus. “The Amazing Digital Circus” was inspired by Harlan Ellison’s short story “I Have No Mouth but I Must Scream,” in which a rogue AI tortures the five remaining humans on Earth both mentally and physically.
“The Amazing Digital Circus” follows a similar format, with a group of humans putting on VR headsets and having their minds unwillingly trapped within a roughly 1990-era circus-styled computer game. An AI named Caine serves as the circus's ringmaster and gives the trapped humans new names and bodies, as the former humans can’t remember most of their previous lives. Caine sends the characters on adventures to keep their minds active and healthy, while also attempting to prevent them from going insane and devolving into creatures called “Abstracts.” “The Amazing Digital Circus” excels at creating mystery, lifelike characters, and humor.
Despite having the aesthetic of a kid’s show, "The Amazing Digital Circus" displays surprisingly in-depth, elaborate characters with unique personalities and designs that shine through in every scene. Gooseworx’s directing talent and the voice actors’ skills are illustrated by the characters’ delivery of jokes that don’t feel forced or flat. The jokes also reinforce the fact that nearly every character has been trapped for so long that they use jokes as a desperate escape from their reality.
Between the seams of the humor and sarcastic cheer of “The Amazing Digital Circus” lies a plot of mystery and a feeling of unease. Despite Caine’s friendly demeanor, slight breaks in his sanity prompt viewers to question Caine’s eerie glee and the true purpose of his circus. Additionally, the inclusion of cryptic spaces and unexplainable mental breaks of the protagonist add a sense of mystery to the confined humans and brings up the idea that the characters that we follow may not be exactly what they seem.
Overall, “The Amazing Digital Circus” excels at creating mystery, unease, and humor, while the unique and memorable characters highlight the voice actors’ talent and Gooseworx’s directing ability. Since the release of its pilot episode, the series has gained over 200 million views, making it the most-viewed pilot episode in YouTube history and leaving many users all over the internet looking forward to the next episode’s release.
