"The Fall Guy" is an action and comedy movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The movie follows a stuntman, Colt Seavers, played by Ryan Gosling who finds himself on an action-filled adventure trying to find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend's movie. The movie didn’t do too well at the box office only grossing $69 million in the first weekend, but it received pretty good reviews with an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and some high audience reviews.
This movie is an ode to filmmakers and the filmmaking process. From seeing how stunts are coordinated to the decision-making process of a director, we see all the work that goes into making a movie. The director was a former stuntman himself, and viewers can see that he truly wanted to spotlight an unsung hero in movies.
The cinematography was one of the most enjoyable parts of the movie for me. It felt like I was watching a movie get made. The camera work is unique. They switch between using CGI to seeing raw footage, they follow the director while she is walking while all of the action is happening in the background, and overall they make you feel like you’re on a set
Action movies have been dragging recently, but "The Fall Guy" rose to the occasion. The film combines the perfect amount of fights, pyrotechnics, and car jumps. The plot twists, while a little bit predictable, were timed well and they didn’t rush the ending.
While this movie is an action/comedy at its core it is a romance. Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling's onscreen chemistry is a prime example of why this movie is good. They are perfectly able to convey the tension of two broken-up people who are still in love with one another, and they make you root for their characters to reconcile.
The casting was done perfectly. Ryan Gosling can portray the charismatic stuntman, who will do anything for love. Aaron Tayor Johnson perfectly captures the energy of a seriously unlikable and arrogant actor. And, Emily Blunt is a heartbroken and work-focused movie director.
The actors all nail the comedy in this movie. They can do the subtle comedy that makes the story feel more real, but they are also to commit to the bits in the movie. It's hard to balance those, but I think it is done well.
While the acting, casting, and other parts were highlists, other components like music and costumes needed work, and there seemed to be a few plot inconsistencies. The music was loud in some parts and some songs didn’t always make sense for the scene. There were a few parts where editing was flawed or the storyline didn’t seem to be clear.
Overall this movie is a breath of fresh air in the action genre. There is a unique storyline and a great ensemble of actors who can create romance, action-filled fights, and a fun cinematic adventure for everyone to watch.
