Noah Kahan is a well known folk-pop musician that examines mental health and its effect on people in his life through his songs. Kahan has mastered taking on the perspective of a friend of someone who is suicidal, a friend of an alcoholic, a child of divorce, and someone with extreme anxiety. He writes about how to combat these situations or more just how to live with them.

Kahan has been absent from the music industry since the tour of his album “Forever. Forever” was released in 2024 making the release of his new hit single “The Great Divide” largely anticipated by fans.

A methodic drum beat, a chirping guitar, with an old beat down voice combined with lyrics that illustrate Kahan's connection to nature emphasize the beauty of his songs---these are aspects of Noah Kahan's music that can be found in his new song “The Great Divide”.

“The Great Divide” is a beautiful yet broken song that describes the highs and lows of having a friend, family member, or lover who has walked a different path than you, and the journey of having to take a step back. Through this song, Kahan dissects the complex feelings of taking a step across the great divide.

The lyrics of “The Great Divide” are knotted into the melodic and peaceful quilt Kahan has crafted with his guitar. The contrast of calming cords to brutal lyrics emphasizes the powerful peace of the song. Every cord progression causes waves of emotion, waves of happiness, guilt, peace, remorse, and regret. These emotional waves allow listeners to form a personal connection with the music. This versatility makes the song more impactful because it covers a multitude of people, places, and experiences. This made me appreciate this song more because it allowed me to form an emotional connection with the song making it more meaningful and applicable to my life.

This song has quickly become my favorite Noah Kahan song because of the analytical characteristics of it. Every lyric has symbolism and can be analyzed in a different way. My favorite line of the song is “You inched yourself across the great divide while we drove aimlessly along the Twin State line”. This lyric describes being on the same path as someone, but going a different direction and trying to continue the connection with them. This lyric evokes a nostalgic feeling of growing up alongside my sister and watching her thrive in college from a distance. Through busy schedules and different life experiences my sister and I continue to try to bridge that gap. To visit each other, call, and text, but  I recognize the fact that our days of eating breakfast together, before school in our pajamas, is over. The realization of this fact makes this song that much more impactful for me.

Another lyric that speaks to me and my personal experiences is “How bad it must have been for you back then and how hard it was to keep it all inside”. This lyric reminds me of one of my friends who I grew up with. This friend was extremely close to me being more like family than a friend. This friend of mine moved away and experienced his father passing while he was decently young. Though we kept in touch, after his father passed he was extremely distant and hard to talk to. When I was younger I didn't quite understand this because I didn't have a grasp on grief, but now I understand. Like Kahan, I often regret not reaching out more to this friend to let him know I was there for him. Through this song Kahan is helping me and so many others get over this regret and become better in the future.

Many Noah Kahan fans share the similar sentiment as me regarding their likeness of “The Great Divide”. This song blew up quickly on social media with fans sharing their favorite lyrics, specific memories, and forming a community. Kahan's song discusses coming back together after being estranged, which is exactly what this song has done. Since Noah Kahan had such a long hiatus from producing the fan base has slightly dissipated, but “The Great Divide” has brought the fanbase and community back together.

All of Kahan’s songs are raw and real, but this song is special. This song is his testimony. This song is Noah Kahan being honest with himself and his audience. He is recognizing his faults, his hopes, and his future. This song was well worth the long wait and builds anticipation to the release of Noah Kahan's new album, which will be released on April 24, 2026. Kahan will be sharing these heartbreaking songs live through his “Great Divide Tour”. This tour will travel across the United States during the Summer of 2026 bringing together fans young and old to enjoy and revel in the beautiful brutality of Noah Kahan's album. Noah Kahan is not just a song writer, but also a poet.
