Betwixt: Discovering the Mind Through a Phone App by Julia McKinney

Updated: May 2

From the Betwixt Website

“Betwixt” is a free first-person mental health game to help tackle real-life scenarios. The game was created by Hazel Gale, a former therapist, and science writer Ellie Dee. The app combines the unique elements of therapy, meditation, and music, as well as “choose your own adventure” to help players combat internal struggles. This app is distinctive from other mental health apps because it tells a story. As the player follows along with the story, they may discover things they never knew about themselves.

The game is set in a surreal fictional world called the In-Between. The player traverses through the story by answering questions about themselves. Each time the player answers a question about themselves, the landscape changes in response to their answer. The game focuses on tuning out the outside world's noise and self-reflecting.

At its core, “Betwixt” focuses on positive psychology and self-reflection that translates to real life. It teaches the player ways to cope with everyday struggles such as procrastination, self-criticism, and overthinking. It prompts users to think about such struggles from different perspectives, thus creating a safe space to express emotions without the impact of everyday stressors.

“Betwixt” is a fascinating and groundbreaking approach to mental health apps. It has completely revolutionized the industry for the better. Since the app was released, numerous studies have been conducted proving its effectiveness in reducing stress and improving overall mental resilience. The app reaches above and beyond and breathes new life into the future of mental health apps.
