Over the summer, senior Izzy Garrett had the opportunity to attend the Governor’s School at UNC Greensboro to further her education and skills in the subject she loves– art. Garrett was admitted into Governor’s School for their visual arts program and had a wonderful and fulfilling experience.
“By the end of Governor's School my focus was to experiment and go further with my art,” said Garrett.
Garrett plans on going to art school for my post-secondary education, and since Garrett went for visual arts, she spent one of her classes in an art studio creating beautiful, well-thought-out pieces.
“My favorite part was my area one class which was visual arts and we had the coolest studio ever,” said Garrett. “The front of it was just windows and the first floor was completely studio space, and then upstairs was the gallery area, it was so awesome.”

Typically, the first thing that comes to mind when people think of art are still-life paintings or landscape drawings but at Governor’s School students learned to appreciate art in a broader sense.
“I never really understood abstract art that had a deeper meaning,” said Garret. “But when you create something like that [with] such a deep meaning behind your piece it means so much to the artist. It taught me to respect other people’s pieces no matter what they made.”
For anyone planning on applying for Governor’s School in the future, Garrett is willing to offer a few pieces of advice.
“I think that if you’re really interested in improving your skills on whatever you’re passionate about I say absolutely go to Governor’s School,” said Garrett. “I would also recommend to anyone doing visual arts to do different medias in your portfolio.”
Governor’s School is an amazing opportunity and a great experience. If you want to apply and work towards your passions, this would be a great option to consider. The optional NC Governor's School Interest meetings for students will be Monday 9/16 and Tuesday 9/17 during FLEX. Students are encouraged to sign up on SecurlyFLEX to learn more.
