On Thursday, November 2, 2023, Watauga High School will be holding a Fall Symposium, a day dedicated to supporting students. Each grade will be partaking in their own events, tailored to where they are in their high school career.

Savannah Wilson, a teacher at Watauga High School, gave a brief overview of what the schedule is expected to look like based on grade levels.

9th grade: Freshman Seminar - Freshmen will be completing activities centered around the Freshman Read for this year, "Phineas Gage," as well as completing some activities to help

them develop resiliency and coping skills when faced with "digital drama."

10th grade: Pre-ACT - Sophomores will be taking the Pre-ACT. This test gives students concrete, practical feedback tailored to their performance to help them better prepare for the ACT in their Junior year.

11th grade: Practice ACT - Juniors will take the practice ACT. Research shows that taking a practice ACT test is the best way for students to increase their scores on the actual ACT.

12th grade: Senior Conference - Students will spend the day learning how to successfully transition from high school to their chosen postsecondary path. The conference will include opportunities to hear from alumni, speak to community organizations and colleges, learn different self-care practices, and prepare interviewing skills.

A team of teachers, administrators, and student services representatives have worked to make sure that each group has a beneficial day.

“We hope that each grade level will see how their day has been specifically curated to help them be successful in their high school career,” said Wilson. “Tenth and eleventh grade students will get necessary practice for the ACT, which is a crucial factor in scholarship opportunities, college admissions, and their high school schedule their senior year.”

The 2023 Fall Symposium will be an opportunity for everyone to take a step forward towards their post-secondary education plans, gain insights on their future career path, explore different educational opportunities, and get a clearer understanding of their learning potential.
