Wordle Craze at Watauga

Sophomore Davis Crymes plays Wordle daily before his first block begins.

Wordle, an engaging daily word game, has become popular amongst students at Watauga High School. For those who don’t know, the goal of the game is to guess a five letter word in six tries, while you receive feedback from the game if you have a letter correct.

Many students at Watauga love the game and play it daily.

“It's very fun and everyone should play it,” said sophomore Miles Page.

One of the most “controversial” topics having to do with Wordle is each player's start word. Students at WHS seem to have many different ways of determining the correct word.

“I always start with the word 'adieu',” said senior Megan Patton.

Other students tend to focus on finding the correct vowels so they can guess the word in as few tries as possible.

“I use a word with a lot of vowels, and/or an s, like ‘poles’ or ‘mates’,” said freshman Chloe Hemsoth.

However, some students are very carefree when choosing their start word for the day.

Page said that his start word is, “The name of whoever I'm sitting beside.”

Another topic of conversation among WHS students is that the New York Times purchased Wordle for millions of dollars. Many students are worried that their beloved word game will see significant changes, one of the most concerning being that a paywall could be added to the game.

“I think it's a little annoying since we might have to start paying for a fun game,” Patton said. “Part of the reason it is fun is because it is free and so many people play it and now that could change.”

Others are not as worried about the news.

“As long as they don't change the base game too much I don't care,” Hemsoth said. “I like how Wordle is right now and don't want it to change, but I feel like the New York Times won't change it because people love how it is already.”

Many Wordle players play other word games or spin offs of Wordle.

“I play the New York Times mini crossword and spelling bee,” senior Jillian Russert said.

Wordle is clearly popular among students at WHS and it’s a fantastic way to get your brain working daily.
