Members of the Watauga Women's Swim Team cheer on their teammates.
As the winter sports season comes to a close, many of these athletes have been playing and practicing since before winter break. Watauga winter sports include swimming, wrestling, basketball, and indoor track, as well as a few others.
The indoor track team has experienced success this year.
“The indoor track season is coming to a close soon, and even though there have been a couple events canceled because of snow, overall the meets have been very successful and fun,” said Miles Page, sophomore.
Winter sports events are always threatened by inclement weather, but still succeed despite the adverse conditions.
“We already have several people state-competition qualified in field events and we'll hopefully have some in track events,” Page said.
The winter season also means wrestling. Wrestling faced some setbacks last season due to COVID and teammates being out due to exposure and other COVID related difficulties, but now it is getting back into its groove.
“So far, the wrestling season has been going great, we have found much success in our conference dual meets,” said Grayson Elliott, sophomore.
Although last year was a harder time for the wrestling team in terms of COVID, it is not immune this year.
“The Coronavirus has certainly affected our team,” Elliott said.
Due to the close nature of the sport wrestling has had their fair share of COVID absences.
“The majority of our team has been out at one point or another due to a positive test result, or being deemed a close contact,” Elliott said
Although usually associated with summer, swimming is in fact a winter sport. Maddy Elmore, a sophomore at Watauga is a member of the swim team here at Watauga.
“Overall we are doing very well this season," said Elmore. "We have beaten most teams we have competed against this season."
The All-Conference swim meet has passed, and the Watauga swim team showed up and took all. Both the Women's and Men's Swim Teams won conference titles. This win allowed a group of Watauga swimmers to go to Charlotte for the 4a regional swim meet.
Based on Maxpreps rankings as of February 1, the wrestling and swim teams are all first in their conference.
This winter sports season is coming to a close, and the spring season approaching means that the final standings of the Watauga teams are published. This sports season has been marked with COVID setbacks and issues causing competitions to be rescheduled and players to have to miss training and competitions. Watauga teams have pulled through the challenges and worked their hardest.
