Every summer,
since I was maybe eight,
we have gone to the beach.
Our beach of choice
being Ocracoke Island,
in the Outer Banks.
There is a spot there
not many know about
where you can find
wild hermit crabs.
They sit in the rocks
while the waves slap
against the shore.
Their shells
are not beautiful,
not like the ones
in a pet store.
They are cracked,
broken and dirty.
Big ones and little ones
in all different shapes.
They don’t look special
on the outside,
but little me realized their beauty,
and it’s helped me learn,
that not everything
has to look perfect
to be pretty.
