WHS Sustainability Club Resumes Regular Meetings

Updated: Nov 8, 2021

Club members Nora Williams, Sullivan McAulay, Lily Wilson, and Piper Saunders meet to discuss their committee.

Watauga High School Sustainability Club met for the first time on Thursday, September 2 before holding their first event on Saturday, September 11 at the Boone Greenway. About 64 members are currently a part of the club, which is led by President Sidra Miller, Vice President Gwendolyn Anderson, Secretary Moriah Bollman, treasurer Lily Wilson, and Social Media Managers Nora Williams, Lucy Walker, and Hannah Rabinowitz. The club meets every other Thursday morning at 8 a.m. in Dr. Cappozoli’s room, 3405.

On September 11th, club members met at the South Fork of the New River at the Boone Greenway. The group collected about 25 large bags of trash, with each attending club member filling a bag each, according to Secretary Moriah Bollman, junior.

“We’re going to have one more river cleanup,” Bollman said. The club also plans to “help two of the elementary schools with garden cleanups in the spring.” Other club members will focus on fundraising and virtual activism, such as creating and sharing informational social media posts.

Moriah Bollman’s sister, Maddie, is a freshman club member.

“As a cross country runner, I run on the Greenway every day,” Maddie said. She went on to explain the importance of protecting our natural community resources in Boone.

Sidra Miller, current Sustainability Club president, shared her vision for the future of the club.

“I’d say some goals of the club are to increase sustainable community involvement, raise school awareness about climate issues and local climate issues and local climate inequity as related to social justice,” Miller said. She also hopes to “reduce the school’s carbon footprint through both individual and infrastructural changes.”

To get involved, students can attend any meeting and/or follow the club Instagram @whs_sustainability_club. Club officer Moriah Bollman also offered to add students to the GroupMe if they email her to let her know they’re interested.
