With the temperature getting lower and lower as winter approaches, hot chocolate is growing in popularity. Boone has lots of local coffee shops, but the big question is “which one has the best hot chocolate?”
Local Lion has a great atmosphere and a drive-through, which other local shops don’t have. Local Lion’s hot chocolate was scorching and had a strong chocolate taste. They make their hot chocolate with milk, and at first, it had a different taste than other hot chocolates that took some getting used to. The first sips felt like the chocolate wasn’t dissolved enough. Local Lion has affordable prices, and the hot chocolate is $3.20! Overall, it was a good hot chocolate but was not my favorite.
Higher Grounds is a coffee shop at the New Market Center, and I ordered their hot chocolate as well. Higher Grounds has my favorite hot chocolate because it is always the perfect temperature, is not too sweet, and is very smooth and thick. The price of a hot chocolate at Higher Grounds is $3.28, which is a little more expensive than Local Lion but is still very reasonable. They make their hot chocolate with milk and put whipped cream on top, which makes it even better. The environment in Higher Grounds is very calm and relaxing, which is exactly what you want from a coffee shop.
The last hot chocolate that I reviewed was from Kovu’s Coffee in Boone on the 105 extension. The inside of Kovu’s Coffee was my favorite because it had different rooms and was not too crowded. The hot chocolate that I ordered was the sweetest and richest of the 3 reviewed, but it was delicious and reasonably priced, as were the other two.
Hot chocolate is a staple drink for the colder months, and giving support to local coffee shops is extremely helpful to them. Boone has lots of options for hot chocolate, and these are just a few great options to choose from for your next wintery drink!
