On Sunday, September 10, Boone held its seasonal Vintage Market at Horn in the West. Various vintage item collectors and sellers set up stands and invited the public to purchase their items. The event revolved around vintage clothing, local art, homemade jewelry, plants, upcycled clothing, food, and music.
While a large demographic of the event attendees were college students, many of Watauga’s students with an interest in fashion and vintage goods also attended the market.
“I love thrifting and vintage clothes so that was the biggest draw for me,” says Ava Curtis, sophomore. “A lot of the demographic of Boone was there and that was really cool to see!”
In addition to clothing, the market also provided social ties between Boone locals, Appalachian State students, Watauga High School students, and people who traveled from different states to come and visit Boone.
“My favorite part about the market was the people. Everyone there was so kind and excited to be there,” says Leila Zwetsloot, senior. “I felt connected to the community since I saw people I recognized from town being interested in the same thing as me.”
While the event was good for the community and unified people with the same interests, some students had some complaints about the prices and organization of the event.
“Meeting different vendors and running into several people that I know made me feel connected with the community,” says Eileen Gulley-Ryan, senior. “The biggest drawback of the event were the high prices of a lot of the cool items. It was also very crowded which made it difficult to look at everything there.”
