After many months of hard work, Watauga High School’s Theatre Department performed their production of “Mean Girls”. The musical is based on the beloved movie of the same name, and the whole show was a sensation. The performers on the stage and everyone who worked behind the scenes put on an amazing show that brought a packed house for three nights.
Mean Girls as a musical itself has been a popular choice for many theater departments. I know I was excited when it was announced, and so many others were as well. I was mainly excited because the movie is so well-known, and hearing so many of the famous lines told both through dialogue and through song was exceptionally funny.
This has been one of the more risque pieces that the theater department has performed; as addressed on the tickets, it was recommended for 6th graders and up. However, the more raunchy elements of the story made it entertaining, and the performers seemed to be having a great time on the stage, making the show even more enjoyable.
The casting was perfect. All of the actors embodied the original characters while still putting their own spin on them. The cast also worked great together and portrayed the dynamics of the characters very well. Janis, Damian, and Dorian had some of my favorite scenes because Kyleigh Hogan, William Greene, and Ethan Barnett did a very entertaining and accurate portrayal of the characters. The Plastics and Cady also did a phenomenal job at representing the original movie. Jovie Cornell and Clara Lappan not only acted their roles as Regina and Cady to perfection, but their voices blew me away. Aimee Griffiths was funny as the airheaded Karen, and Lilliana Lemus played the perfect jealous and attention-obsessed Gretchen. And Jax Marsh, who played Aaron Samuels, was convincing as a high school jock.
The sets were eye-catching, and I noticed them the second I walked in the auditorium. The notebook design was clever from a storytelling perspective and was executed well. It's difficult to tell a whole story using only one stage, but the set was utilized in a smart and artistic way.
The dancers and ensemble put on an amazing show as well. The dancers were in sync and put full energy into their performances for the whole show. The ensemble did a great job depicting the many different types of people you see in high school and helped to carry the story along.
The audio and lighting teams also did well. While there were a few mic problems on nights one and three, both the crew and the performers worked through them and went on without any notice. The lighting helped to move the story along, dimming to show the more dramatic moments and brightening during the big dance numbers, and the lights were on cue the whole night.
Overall, the musical was incredible, and you could see all the hard work the entire theatre department put into the show. I heard great reviews from everyone who saw it, and I know I had a great time watching it.
