The Most Important Debate: When to Decorate for the Holidays

November and December are considered to be the holiday season, but many families start decorating at different times. Here at WHS, students are divided on when they should decorate. Some of them are ready to decorate as soon as the weather gets cold, whereas others want to wait for all of the other holidays to pass.

To accurately determine what time is the start of the holiday season, The Powderhorn sent out a survey to the student body. Out of 75 responses, 36 students said that they put up their decorations right after Thanksgiving, 26 students said that they put up their decorations at the beginning of December, 8 students say that they put up their decorations at the beginning of November, 4 students say they put up decorations right before the holidays, and 1 student said that they never decorate.

Most students indicated that right after Thanksgiving was their preference.

“It's after Thanksgiving because food and being thankful for those around us and the privilege we have is a very big part of my family,” McKinley Robbins, sophomore, said. “Cooking good food and giving it to loved ones is far too important to my family to skip over it and overshadow it with the holidays.”

Some students put up their decorations in the beginning of December to make the holiday season last but also to keep it special.

“[I decorate at that time] because before Thanksgiving is way too early, right after Thanksgiving is a little too early, around the beginning of December is good because it's not too early but not too late, and right before the holidays is too late,” said Nathan Cummings, freshman.

Some students also don’t decorate based off of the time period, but when they get certain decorations.

“We don’t decorate or listen to holiday music until we have a Christmas tree,” said Naia Renwick, sophomore.

Ultimately, the holiday season starts when someone wants it to start. There is no right or wrong time to decorate, only the time that makes the person happy.
