The Mast General Store chain has 11 stores in 4 states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. They’re known to help the community in multiple ways, most recently with recovery and relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Many different communities have come together to bring forth aid, and The Mast General Store has been one institution that has truly stood out for their service.
The communities in Western North Carolina were largely affected by Hurricane Helene, including Mast General Store employees.
“The lower level of our home and rentals flooded, up to the insulation, so 3500 square feet was under about 10 feet of water,” said one employee, who wished to protect their privacy after the personal loss of property. “We are very fortunate in that our living space was not destroyed, and that we are all okay, including all of our pets. However, we are still cleaning up due to the amount of tools, outdoor gear, sailing gear, clothes, antiques, etc. that got flooded.”
The community members were each affectedly differently, which led to a greater demand of aid. Fortunately, people came together from various surrounding areas, despite the challenges. The Original Mast General Store reopened the day after Helene hit, and reached out to help anyone in need. Patrick Keleher, an employee, found comfort in helping people through his work.
“Just working at Mast gives you a feeling of family, to those you work with and those who visit,” said Keleher. “I was able to be the one to open the store when the hurricane had passed. Just being able to open our doors and welcome all who came by, and help them in any way we could was very rewarding.”
The Mountain Strong campaign was created by The Mast General Store to raise money after Hurricane Helene hit. Stickers, hoodies, and shirts were sold and proceeds went back to the community to help people in need.
“I love the Mountain Strong program. Our guests, friends, and family wanted to give back immediately, and their concern for the area was palpable,” said the previously cited employee who sustained their own property damage during the storm. “This program allowed folks to help immediately, and while donations were also needed, such as coats, boots, etc. the monetary assistance was critical. While the storm was heartbreaking, it was also heartwarming, to see everyone helping each other.”
The Mountain Strong campaign has already made over $85,000 and is continuing to raise money.
“From the very first John and Faye Cooper, The Mast Store family have been involved with and supported our community. From food drives to clothing drives, coats and shoe drives, the Mast Store has always strived to be a leader in helping those in need,” said Keleher. “When Hurricane Helene hit our area, it was no different. We came together as a family and reached out to help anyone in need. Our store had a large generator, and that allowed us to open our doors the next day at the original store. It became a hub for folks to stop in, get some ice or water, waterproof boots, or even just a hug.”
