On December 6, a chilly Friday evening, Watauga High School choir students came together to sing at the Jones House Annual Christmas Tree Lighting. The performance started around 6 p.m., and the choir huddled together on the Jones house Porch to perform a collection of Christmas classics and winter themed coral pieces. The gathered audience of friends and family was transfixed as they warmed their hands with steaming cups of hot cocoa.
“The people who came to watch had the biggest smiles on their faces and were very happy to watch the Lighting, which made it feel extra special to perform,” said Brecken Sauthoff, a junior at Watauga High School.
Sauthoff is a member of Treble Choir as well as AudioVox, and Sauthoff said her favorite part was singing "The 12 Days of Christmas." Sauthoff said, “I love being able to lean into the humor and performance of that song.”
For those who were absent, "The 12 Days of Christmas" is a rendition of the classic Christmas hits combined into a comedic yet impressive mash up.

The Jones House Lighting is a more informal way for the high school choirs to perform for the community, and the holiday spirit combined with more casual setting creates a unique atmosphere for the performers. This year there was an additional challenge as temperatures sat around 20 degrees that evening.
“Even though we were shivering and very cold, it was a bonding moment,” said Sauthoff
The choirs opened with "Carol of the Bells" as is tradition and closed with "Personet Hodie", a powerful latin piece.
“It was a great experience and everyone left feeling happy, and despite a few hiccups. I think we sounded pretty good,” said Mitchell Jasper, junior.
