Teacher Cadets Class Comes to Watauga

Teacher Cadet students will be able to attend the spring conference. Kara Lawrence, Cheyenne Millsaps, Anna Dishman, and Charlie Stumb attended as part of the Future Teachers of America.

Many students have a goal of someday becoming a teacher. A new class called Teacher Cadets can help students reach that goal. Teacher Cadets will be returning to Watauga High School in the 2023-2024 school year. The class will provide new opportunities and hands-on learning experiences for students.

"The Teacher Cadet Curriculum covers the following: the process of teaching, the methods of teaching, and the practice of teaching. We will teach topics such as different types of learning and teaching, cognitive, moral, and physical development of students, introduction to educational psychology, teaching today's students," said Ms. Rush, who will be teaching the class alongside Ms. Scoggins. "From the day to day activities in the school to how a school board functions, educational policy and teacher leadership in general."

The Teacher Cadet Class will also provide opportunities to go out into the community and interact with different grade levels K-12.

"Students will be able to observe all levels of K-12 teaching and learning. They will also be expected to participate and interact with students in the elementary setting," said Ms. Rush. "They will get to attend a 2-day Teacher Cadet Conference in the Spring where they will be able to collaborate with other future teacher/leaders and attend sessions on different educational topics. The conference also includes a college fair."

If you are interested in being a part of this class, there are a couple requirements before being considered for the class. Students have to be a rising junior or senior as well as have a teacher recommendation and fill out the application found on the registration website by March 20.

"Any student who is interested in pursuing a career in education or a field that works closely with young people of all ages should consider applying," said Ms. Rush.
