Teachers have a huge impact on students' day-to-day lives. From teaching and mentoring to being a friend to their students, the job of a teacher is not an easy task. Teacher Appreciation Week is always the first week of May. It’s a time when students can show how much they love and appreciate their teachers. Students can bring gifts to their teachers or tell them how much they appreciate them. Teacher Appreciation Week is an important time in the school to recognize the hard work teachers put into their jobs.
Students around Watauga High School were asked who their favorite teachers are. They were also asked about their favorite things about their teachers and why they appreciated them. Funny and lighthearted memories were also shared about their favorite teachers.
¨My favorite teacher is Ben Maggard. He makes his learning environment fun and comfortable for all students,” said sophomore Brennan Smith. “He gives help and support to his students, you can tell he cares about his students.”
A comfortable learning environment is one of the most important things for a teacher to accomplish in their classrooms. Maggard and Smith also reconnected outside of school where they played softball against each other.
“I played against him in a church softball league. He beat me but we had a lot of fun competing against each other,” said Smith. “It showed me that he not only makes connections inside his classroom but outside of the classroom.”
Sophomore Elizabeth Price shared how her favorite teacher is someone who is fun and compassionate towards all of their students.
“One of my favorite teachers is Mrs. Lloyd. She is very fun and compassionate to every student that steps foot into her classroom,” said Price. “She is also very understanding of students and very social with her students.”
Teacher Appreciation Week helps students to thank their teachers for the work that they do. Appreciation of teachers shouldn't only be confined to a week but should be every day of the year. It is no secret that teachers have one of the most difficult jobs in America. Their work ethics, compassion, kindness, intelligence, and passion for learning and their students should never go unnoticed or unappreciated.
