The Spark
Creative Writing
Submission Guidelines
Here at The Spark we do our best to represent all students and their creative work, but to do so appropriately we have to set a few basic precedents:
The work submitted must be school appropriate, meaning it has to be something you could submit to your art or English teacher with no issue.
We don’t accept content that defames other students or teachers. Content that involves subjects such as school shootings, extremism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, etc. also will not be accepted. We also don’t accept content that contains biased or misleading information.
If your work contains content that has the potential to be triggering, we ask that you put a trigger warning on your piece.
If accepted and published your work will be viewable on the internet at large and not just the Watauga County domain.
Writing that is submitted should be in 12 pt. size and in Times New Roman. (If you want to use a different font just ask and we can evaluate what you want to do)
When you submit writing to The Spark, you are giving us the right to edit the piece for grammar errors, formatting and other small details. (If you don’t want us to do any editing whatsoever, contact us.)
We accept all genres of creative writing, including but not limited to poetry, short stories, literary journalism, novels, etc. If you want to submit writing that you aren’t sure qualifies as Creative Writing or not just contact us!
If you would like to submit a work more than approximately 20 pages, we ask that you would include a synopsis. Otherwise there is no maximum or minimum on the length of the piece.
Writing submitted should be through Google Documents.
We do not take anonymous submissions to protect both the integrity of our publication and your safety as a writer. We do not want to miss any “red flags” in your work which might need review by a counselor.
