“Star Wars: The Bad Batch” Returns With a Darker Tone in Its Second Season

"The Bad Batch” is an animated show and a prequel to the classic Star Wars films. The series focuses on the transition from the Republic to the evil Empire most prominent in the original trilogy (Episodes 4, 5, and 6). The show features a cast of returning characters from previous seasons and a diverse cast of celebrity cameos like Wanda Sykes and Tim Olsenn.

The second season has 16 episodes, each about 30 minutes long. The series focuses on the survival of The Bad Batch. This refers to both the series name and also the name of the main character's team hostile galaxy.

Spoilers Ahead:

The season starts slow, but later episodes, focusing on the team going on fun, lighthearted treasures hunts while narrowly escaping the Empire's clutches, are filled with action-packed scenes with the Batch slowly learning the secrets of the Empire. These secrets have been looming over them since Season One, namely the decommissioning and abandonment of the Clone Army.

As the season progresses, it gets much darker with episodes like “The Solitary Clone”, setting the tone that remains for the rest of the season. Episodes 7 and 8, "The Clone Conspiracy" and "Truth and Consequences" are a two-part story arc that gives the overview of how the clones are being demolished by the evil of the Empire. Despite their valiant service during the “Clone Wars” and the millions who sacrificed their lives, the Empire doesn't care.

Overall, the show focuses on how dictatorships and military dominated governments do not care about their citizens despite what they say. For them, their citizens and people are only seen as expendable tools to be used for their rule and power.

A few episodes even take place from the perspective of a Clone Trooper named Crosshair who is still in the Empire while all fellow troopers are being killed and forcefully retired. His determination to keep fighting dwindles as he sees just how expendable he is to the Empire. When a fellow Clone trooper is killed in front of him by a newly assigned Imperial Officer, he finally loses his trust and faith. Crosshair kills this officer for allowing his friend to die and is therefore captured in a secret research base.

The ending two episodes of the series is another hour long two-parter where the team leads the beginning of a clone rebellion to try and rescue their former team member Crosshair and learn the truth that the clones are being secretly experimented on for the empire's genetic program and being mutilated and tortured. In the finale, the crew becomes trapped as their friend and a core member of the team ‘Tech’ sacrifices himself to allow the team to survive with the series ending on a cliffhanger.

Those wishing to complete their Star Wars lore should certainly continue with this series. While the second season of "The Bad Batch" leans into the darker side of the Star Wars universe, it offers a strong critique of a society heading toward totalitarianism.
