The winter sports season has wrapped up and Watauga’s spring sports are already up and running, with women's soccer, tennis, softball, men's golf, baseball, track and field, and lacrosse already into their pre-season and conference games.
On Tuesday March, 1, Women’s Soccer had a spectacular start to the season with a 9-0 mercy rule against McDowell. After a successful season last year, making it to the second round of playoffs, they have planned to win their conference, and take another shot at a state championship. The toughest conference team they are expected to play this year is Hibriten. They will play them at home on April 14. Two other important home games were against Abingdon High School on March 10, and East Forsyth on March 31. All home soccer games start with JV at 4:30,
and Varsity follows at 6:00.
Men's Tennis has started off this year with a statement at their home tournament on March 2. They beat Avery High School nine to zero. They also traveled to South Caldwell on March 8 and earned their second victory with a score of five to one. Their biggest home match of the year is against Hibriten on March 15. Watauga’s Tennis Team is filled with talent this season. They are looking to win their conference, and have many players go deep into the playoffs.
Thirdly, softball has had an impressive pre-season with a win against McDowell, and a well deserved victory against Wilkes Central. Two important home games to watch this season are Alexander Central on the March 20, and South Caldwell on April 22. All home games start at 6:00 p.m.. They have a stacked schedule with lots of games and tough competition. All home games are held at the Watauga Softball field on campus.
Golf has also started their season. They have competed in a couple of practice matches, and their first conference match is against Freedom in Mimosa Hills. Due to the Boone Golf Course not opening until later this spring, the golf team’s first home match is on April 11, starting at 2:00 p.m. They have a total of 6 conference games, and have made the goal of winning their conference. With lots of talent and a full roster, the Watauga Men's Golf Team is planning on making a big run into playoffs. All home matches are held at the Boone Golf course, and start at 2:00 p.m.
Baseball has also started off strong with a 2-1 record. They fell short to Asheville High School, but beat AC Reynolds, and earned a big win against Davie County High School. They also have set goals of winning conference and making a big run into the playoffs. Two big home games for Watauga baseball this year are against South Caldwell and Alexander Central. You can watch these games at the Watauga baseball field on March 22, and March 25. JV starts at 4:30, and Varsity follows at 6:00. The team this year has many players that are prospects for college teams or are committed to playing collegiate baseball, so this season should be exciting.
Track and Field has also kicked off their season with their meet on Saturday, March 5, at AC Reynolds. Even with the tough competition from TC Roberson, Asheville High School, and AC Reynolds, Watauga did extremely well. The distance runners killed the competition with multiple runners in the top five events in the 3200 and 1200 meter race. Watauga has a home meet at 4:30 p.m. on March 23. Their competitors for that meet are Alexander Central, Freedom High School, and McDowell. Also, the conference championship will be held at Watauga on May 5. This meet will include the top runners from all over the conference that are running for spots in the state meet. Watauga’s Track and Field program has a full roster with a variety of talent in all events. There were multiple state qualifiers last season, with some placing on the podium. They look to send more athletes to the state meet this year.
Finally, Men's and Women's Lacrosse have begun their season games. The lacrosse program took a break over COVID, but now has full rosters, and is doing very well in their conference. The biggest home games for the Lacrosse team this season are against TC Roberson on March 22, and Asheville on the March 31. Lacrosse games start at 5:00 p.m. with women’s, and men’s follow at 6:30 p.m. All home games are played on the athletic practice field just below the football field.
