On Tuesday, September 28, Watauga students participated in the annual game of Powderpuff Football. Powderpuff, a part of Spirit Week, attracted many students who supported their classmates and gained spirit points.
Seniors ultimately won Powderpuff, but spectators from every grade at the high school showed up to cheer on their classmates.
¨My favorite part was being with my friends and cheering on the sophomore players,¨ said Raelin Nolan, a 10th grade spectator.
Carlton Dyer is a senior at Watauga she is a member of Student Council and played in Powderpuff.
¨I'm so pumped with the outcome of Powderpuff this year in more than one way. I was super happy that the Seniors won because who doesn't want to win their senior year?¨ Dyer said.
Elsie Davis, a 9th grader, thought otherwise of the outcome. ¨There weren't a lot of people there, and it seemed very bias towards the seniors,¨ Davis said
There was worry that the turnout for Powderpuff would be underwhelming, but the overall turnout exceeded everyone's expectations.
¨With serving on the Student Council for the past two years, I've heard many rumors of how Powderpuff went in years past.¨ Dyer said. ¨After this year's Powderpuff game, everyone on the council was talking about the huge spectator turnout, so we had around the same amount of participants but more spectators.¨
This year, due to the lack of a homecoming dance, Powderpuff was on the mainstage as a Spirit Week activity. Compared to previous years, Student Council promoted Powderpuff more.
¨I didn't participate in previous years because I didn't really know about Powderpuff but also because of COVID messing up the 2nd half of my high school career, ¨ said Dyer.
Coaches at the Powderpuff game played a pivotal role due to the lack of knowledge of football that the players had. The coaches were tasked with teaching all of the players how to play and win football in under 30 minutes. Grayson Elliot, a sophomore, was a coach for the sophomore team.
¨All of the players listened to the coaches, and executed the plays we had installed at a high level,¨ Elliott said
Powderpuff players and coaches agreed that they would return next year to keep the school spirit activity alive.
¨In terms of my future in coaching Powderpuff, I will definitely be returning next season, ready to help my team win,¨ said Elliot
Lauren Patterson and Kasey Gragg who are both sophomores at Watauga agreed that Powderpuff was a social event not only for the spectators but for the players as well.
¨I enjoyed getting to meet new people my age and just having fun playing football,¨ Gragg said
Powderpuff was a fun and bonding experience not only between the players but between the coaches. Grade levels had the chance to interact and become friends. Overall Powderpuff was a lighthearted and ultimately hilarious event that helped raise spirit at Watauga.
