The show Squid Game has become a surprise hit, ranking within the top 10 most-watched Netflix series of all time.
“Red Light, Green Light” is a phrase that to Squid Game fans brings fear and worry. The first season of the Squid Game launched this September on Netflix and was instantly a hit.
The Korean action-mystery drama has gotten an uproar of ratings from both fans and critics alike. The story takes place in Korea and follows characters who are in debt into the millions. The main protagonist Gi Hun is an eccentric, down on his luck average guy who is constantly being beaten up for owing money to many. When a man in a suit offers to play a simple kids game with Gi Hun for 100,000 won, he quickly accepts.
After winning, the man leaves but gives Gi a card with a phone number. Still needing more money, Gi calls the number in the hopes of paying off his debts before he is killed by loan sharks. Stepping into a van, he is drugged and falls asleep before the shot pans to the pink-colored guards with their shaped masks.
Gi Hun enters into a world full of these simple children’s games. Each game is filled with hundreds of participants who are killed if they lose. There can only be one winner. The prize for success is 44 million won which translates to about 34 million dollars, tempting for all participants. Friends and alliances will be formed, enemies and grudges will also be created. Who are the mysterious guards in pink, who are running these murderous games?
Squid Game was truly an oddity for Netflix and Korean drama as a whole. Never before has a film or show become such a widespread phenomenon outside of Asia on such a massive scale. It has reached Netflix’s top 10 most-watched series of all time, raking in millions for the streaming service.
The actors are now superstars with their social media gaining millions of followers in only a few hours. Many viewers compare it to the Hunger Games series. If you're a fan of those movies you will love Squid Game. A cultural phenomenon that almost everyone will enjoy, the first season is available on Netflix.
