Every year, Watauga High School’s Interact Club completes a service project in which they provide the student body with a prom dress shop, an opportunity for students to choose a full outfit to wear to prom, free of cost.
“This year, we have more donations than ever, and we will be having a final sale rack because there are a few things that have been in our stores for over ten years,” said club president, Hannah Rabinowitz, senior. “This is a long-standing tradition for the club, and the community-wide donations are really important.”
The Prom and Homecoming dress shops are Interact Club’s biggest in-school service events, but the club does community-wide services as well.
“We have adopted an area of the Greenway and the river, and we have a road nearby that we have adopted (Cecil Miller Road),” Rabinowitz said. “We make sure those areas are clean.”
Ms. Irving is the advisor behind Interact Club. Her interior design classes partner with the club to plan, design, and set up the prom dress shop.
“As a club, we partner with the interior design classes and they design the shop for the year, which is a big project for them,” said Rabinowitz. “It usually takes 1 to 2 class periods of planning, and then they set it up in one day.”
Every year, when the shop is set up, the club spreads awareness to let students know that they should plan to attend on certain days to look through the racks. Typically, the shop is set up for 2 weeks prior to prom and is available before and after school. The shop had over 100 students visit, and 40 students found a full outfit this year.
The shop makes prom a fun and inclusive event for the Watauga community. Even if students already have a plan for prom, the shop is open to anyone, and the club loves to see people look through the clothes. Additionally, donations are welcome.
“We love to have anyone come and look,” Rabinowitz said. “Every student can get a full outfit for free, and we would like to take any donations that people bring in.”
