The Watauga High School Battle of the Books team meets every Friday during FLEX in the library. They are under the advisement of the new librarian Ms. Dana Ramseur along with French teacher, Madame Heather Tedder. The team consists of HBOB veterans and even a few newcomers.
According to junior, Josh Moretz, a newcomer to HBOB, the team will be well prepared to compete.
“I feel really confident because we have a really good team and we're ready to do a lot of practice,” said Moretz.
Since WHS is the only high school in Watauga County, the team will not have to compete at the district level. Ms. Ramseur expressed that she believed it will help the team that there is not a district competition because they will be able to go into the regional competition as winners of our county already.
“Because we’re the only high school we’re already the champions for the district. So I feel like we’re undefeated already, we’re going to go in there with confidence,” said Ms. Ramseur.
Senior, Jordan Rodgers stated that even though there are many newcomers she thinks the team will work well together.
“I feel that the chemistry of the team this year is very solid,” said Rodgers. “While we have a lot of new blood on the team we also have a good number of experienced people on the team and that helps to balance out. Those who are familiar with BOB are truly an asset in helping their new teammates. [This] gives us fresh perspectives on the books and how we approach competition,” said Jordan.
Many of the other team members are also excited and optimistic about the coming meeting and competition. This is a good experience for students to just get together and enjoy reading.
“My biggest hope for HBOB this year is that we will truly just be able to come together and have fun with it," said Moretz. "Win or lose I feel that this is a good opportunity for a group of people with similar interests to come together and have fun despite the last few years where interaction was limited.”
