Since the Watauga High School volleyball team is scheduled to end their regular season on October 20, team members reflect on their season so far. The team traditionally has done well in their league, and this year has been no different with Varsity’s 11-3 win-loss record.
WHS volleyball players are dedicated to their sport and team. Players have expressed that they enjoy playing volleyball for a variety of different reasons.
“I enjoy playing volleyball because it is a very powerful sport and takes a lot of work,” says JV player Kayla Graham.
Lots of WHS volleyball players have said that the team aspect of the game is something they really enjoy. The bonds between players have become one of the team’s favorite parts of volleyball.
“I enjoy playing volleyball because I get to play with my favorite people,” says JV player Katherine McCullough. “And being on a team makes playing volleyball a whole lot more fun.”
Players are supportive of their teammates both on and off the court. They also say that being on such a hard-working team pushes players to be their best on the court.
“My favorite part of being on a team is that they push me to work hard,” McCullough says. “We fail together and we succeed together, so putting in 110% is always the expectation.”
The team has excelled in many skills this season and in years past. This year, their communication skills have proved to be valuable on the court.
“My team is doing well in working for each other rather than working against each other to be the better player,” McCullough says.
The team’s close bonds have also been useful on the court. Players feel comfortable working with their teammates to make sure their team excels during gameplay.
“As a team I think we move really well on the court and we have a close court relationship with each other,” says Varsity player Maggie Combs.
However, the WHS volleyball teams are continuing to work hard to improve their skills and gameplay. They think there is always room for improvement, even on such an impressive team.
“Some things we could improve on is staying up and energetic throughout the entire duration of the game,” Combs says.
Many members of the team also have individual goals for the season, along with the skills they are working on with their team. This goes to show just how devoted the players are to their sport.
“I know for myself I am working on seeing the set before I go up to block the other team,” McCullough says. “So that I jump at the perfect time and I am at the right angle to block it.”
The WHS volleyball team works hard in practice and always gives their maximum effort.
“Our team is constantly working and training everyday in order to get better,” Graham says.
The WHS volleyball team has had a fantastic season so far and everyone is excited to see how the remainder of the season turns out!
