"Ode to Summer Nights" by Anna Norris

Student Submission

Heat against my skin

Makes it hard to breathe.

I choke on the laughter that is inside me and surrounds me.

We dare each other to jump

Into

the

water

Summer dresses sticky with sweat and sunscreen.

Full of promise and hopefulness,

Feet dirty with sand that the waves cannot clean,

and it slips past me like a thief, impossible to catch.

The last remains of summer cling to flip flops casually tossed

into the back of the closet,

praying for summer nights

while the snow blows outside.
