Mr. WHS Returns

The Student Council has just announced that Mr. WHS will happen this December 4, and the first interest meeting occurred on October 20. Due to COVID students have not been able to participate in this fundraising event ever since the 2019-2020 school year. Now it is time for students to decide whether or not they want to contribute to this year's pageant.

Brayden Collins, a sophomore at Watauga, is planning on participating in this year's Mr. WHS.

¨My brother is on StuCo (Student Council), so that's how I heard about it,¨ Collins said. ¨I was going to do it last year too, but it got cancelled due to COVID.¨

The last Mr. WHS happened in 2019. This means many underclassmen are unaware of the tradition.

Mr. WHS is a beauty pageant that breaks the tradition of women being the star and allows men to show their talents and charisma. While all of this is an important experience for many, it is also a large fundraiser for the school and people in need in the community.

Mr. WHS is a hallmark of the Watauga experience.

¨I am going to participate because I think it'll be a fun thing to do with friends, and it's for a good cause,¨ Collins said. ¨You really can't ask for much more out of a high school experience.¨

Mr. WHS is a lighthearted tradition that promotes unity among students while also raising money for charity. Carlton Dyer, a member of Student Council, is helping plan and execute Mr. WHS.

¨It's a great opportunity to give back to the community. Student Council picks a few families every year that all of the proceeds will be divided and given to them,¨ Dyer said. ¨Guys that choose to participate in the pageant must raise a minimum of $200 as their enrollment in the show, so every man is already giving to the community. ¨

All participants will be helping the community, and the men who participate in Mr. WHS will be able to win prizes .

¨You also get the opportunity to bid on many fun and festive baskets that are donated by local businesses,¨ Dyer said. ¨Some things in baskets from previous years that may appear this year include a dinner for two gift certificates, a spa set, a gift card to a shop, and a purse. The options are endless!! ¨

Through Mr. WHS, students raise a large sum of money to support local families in need.

¨We raised a total amount of $25,000 and all of it was raised by the student body!¨ said Dyer.

The prizes combined with giving back to the community isn't the only thing that students will gain from participating.

¨Students are able to socialize with other students that participate or are affiliated in some way with the show,” Dyer said. “It helps the Student Body mingle and new friendships to be formed!¨

Senior Ethan Campbell is head of Mr. WHS this year.

¨I would say that you should absolutely do it and that no one who has ever done it has regretted it or not come back the next year. I know the show can seem intimidating and sound a bit odd but it's so fun and it's for a great cause,¨ Campbell said. ¨I would tell the underclassmen that for most people who have done it, it was the most fun thing they've done their entire high school careers.¨

Although Mr. WHS can be a bit intimidating, it is a very rewarding event that helps the community in Watauga.

¨I'm excited to have a fun community event for a good cause. I think people are going to be more excited this year than ever for the show and I'm very excited for that!¨ Campbell said.

The Student Council at Watauga has been working full speed ahead to create many different events for the student body to participate in this school year.

Students who are interested in participating in the pageant show should keep their eyes peeled in their email, on social media (specifically the Student Council Instagram, @wataugastuco) and for flyers around school that will contain details of an interest meeting.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, reach out to Ms. Wood, Ethan Campbell (Head of Mr. WHS), Ella Carroll (Student Body President), Carlton Dyer (Public Relations) or any of your student representatives. Anyone who wants to participate should look out for more updates soon.
