Misinformation Abounds for the Watauga Rec Center in a time of COVID

Since August 6th, the town of Boone’s businesses have been told that customers and employees alike are required to wear masks while indoors. However, there were many businesses that were not affected by this order given that they were actually county buildings that separate them from the August 6th mandate. One of these buildings was the Watauga County Recreation Center.

“I went last Monday (August 16th) and there were about 50 people in the gym and no one was wearing masks,” said Jonah Zerucha, a freshman who attends the Rec center.

While Zeruchca said no one was wearing masks, as it turns out, that fits perfectly in the protocol of the situation. Due to the Rec Center being a county building, it wasn’t affected by the original mask mandate.

Facilities such as the Rec center wouldn’t be affected by a mask mandate until August 18th when the Watauga County Board of Commissioners implemented the county-wide mask mandate which then phased in the wearing of masks to every facility in the county.

The Watauga County Board of Commissioners implemented a mask mandate- for all County facilities (including the community recreation center). The Town of Boone implemented a mask mandate prior to the County’s August 18, 2021 date, Deron Geouque, Watauga County Manager stated.

Misinformation can spread very quickly in a time of crisis. It is important that we keep up to date with what is really happening in our community.
