Homecoming week is certainly a favorite for many students at Watauga with its unique spirit days, numerous events, and of course the Homecoming dance. This time of year is always filled with anticipation as students take on Powderpuff, Spikeball, King of the Court, and Friday Night Lights. The halls bustle with excitement as students admire one another’s Adam Sandler outfits and discuss their Homecoming plans. With school spirit at an all-time high, Watauga High School’s 2023 Homecoming week was definitely a memorable one.
The week began with an exhilarating game by the Men’s Soccer Team where numerous students showed out to express their support. On Tuesday, girls gathered under the stadium lights to showcase their best football skills in Powderpuff, resulting in a win by the seniors.
Lucy Bachman, senior, was a participant in Powderpuff football.
“Powderpuff was so fun, it was great that the seniors won. I had a great time,” said Bachman.
On Wednesday, students participated in the annual Spikeball tournament where they battled for the title of Grand Spikeball Champion. The Watauga Volleyball team also took a huge win over Ashe with a game consisting of 5 sets.
J.T. Cook, junior, went home with a win as a three-time Spikeball Champ. He participates in every tournament for the competition and excitement.
“It was really good winning the spikeball tournament because I also won it sophomore year, and I won the prom tournament freshman year too. It was really nice to win again and live up to the hype,” said Cook. “I would say the only reason I have experienced this success is from playing with my friends, who are very competitive and good, along with my partner, Luke Edmisten, also being a very good player as well. I was pretty confident that we were going to win, but it still felt good as ever once we won the championship.”
Thursday night consisted of King of the Court where boys exhibited their finest setting, passing, and hitting. However, students fell to the wrath of the faculty team, who ended up with the ultimate win.
The week closed out with Watauga’s Homecoming Game against South Caldwell. On Friday, The fun-filled night started out with a tailgate where multiple clubs and groups assembled to provide games, food, and face-painting. After a successful first half, Homecoming court lined up on the field where friends and family cheered on our royal peers. Eli Greene, senior, who was crowned 2023 Homecoming King, expanded on what it was like to be a part of the court this year as well as the energetic atmosphere of this year’s Homecoming game.
“It was nice being a part of HoCo court this year because that shows that people were there for me and cared enough about me for me to get their vote. There wasn't really a big process leading toward me becoming King. I wasn't too worried about it because I was just focused on winning the game and having that as my first priority,” Greene said. “The football game definitely had more of an atmosphere compared to the other home football games we have had so far. There were definitely more people there and you could tell when there would be a big play or something like that.”
Friday night ended in a blow-out Pioneer win with a final score of 49-7.
On Saturday, students danced the night away with friends at a well-lit Homecoming Dance. The theme was “Light Up the Night,” which was clear with the amount of neon lights and glow sticks in attendance.
Overall, Homecoming week was a huge success with new spirit themes, events, and plenty of school spirit. Students will remember the week for its plethora of exciting activities and a dance that would be hard to forget.
