Senior Eden Gil recently transitioned from living in Peru to living in Boone. Gil originally attended an online school called North Carolina Cyber Academy and pointed out various factors that made her transition to Watauga smoother than expected.
When Gil lived in Peru, she faced challenges that shaped her character.
“Living in Peru helped me to be flexible in many different situations and learn my way around unfamiliar circumstances,” said Gil. “I have more confidence in my ability to navigate places I don't know, as well as assimilate into the culture and flow of life of whatever place I am.”
Prior to Watauga, Gil attended an online school.
“I was previously in an online public school called NCCA: North Carolina Cyber Academy. The transition from online school to in-person has been surprisingly smooth,” said Gil. “The pace of in-person school is a bit more relaxed than it was at my previous school—surprisingly—and I find the school days and workload to be much more manageable.”
Gil states the FLEX system has helped her throughout her transition.
“I'd have to say that my favorite aspect of being at Watauga High is the comfortable pace of the day,” said Gil. “I appreciate the FLEX arrangement: having time specifically carved out for completing work that you'd otherwise have to do at home. And the variety of classes available is really nice.”
One teacher in particular has stood out to Gil during her time here at Watauga.
“One teacher that has stood out to me is Mr. Randy Combs,” said Gil. “He's my Economics and Personal Finance teacher and has made a subject that I thought I'd dislike very interesting. I do wish that I'd transferred here earlier so that I could take AP Euro with him, though!”
Combs' class is Gil’s favorite class at Watauga.
“My favorite class this semester is probably EPF with Mr. Combs,” Gil said. “That said, I'm really enjoying all of my classes!”
Gil’s road to Watauga has been paved and polished by teachers and the community alike, not to mention her background in Peru.
