NAHS club members creating the bowls sold at the Empty Bowls event
National Art Honors Society (NAHS) will be holding Empty Bowls once again this coming spring. This event gives NAHS club members an opportunity to create ceramic bowls, collaborate with the Hunger-Health Coalition, and bring the Watauga Community together.
National Art Honors Society is a club that allows for artistic expression and participation in community service for art students at Watauga.
“The club motivates all of us to be creative and that it's never a chore to come and be a part of what we do,” senior and NAHS president Cora Jones said.
Through art courses students are given opportunities and resources that will help them throughout the entirety of their lives.
“Students benefit from art education since it ties them to their own culture as well as the rest of the world,” said NAHS club member Zoe Lee. “Not only can studying the arts boost academic achievement, but it also improves learning in areas such as math and sciences, as well as the literary field.”
If you have taken an art class during your high school career you are able to join the club. NAHS holds a variety of different activities and meetings throughout the year. Club members help create murals around the school, create artistic products, and of course, collaborate to make Empty Bowls possible.
“[NAHS] gives students the opportunity to change not only their community but what it looks like through artistic expression,” Jones added. “What we do is fun, but we are responsible for different service activities and all the beautiful murals you see around the school.”
Empty Bowls is held yearly and is an artistic form of community service. The bowls were created by NAHS and sold to members of the community.
“The proceeds go towards the Hunger and Health Coalition who serve those in the high country struggling with food insecurity,” said Jones.
It is never too late to become a member of NAHS. They welcome all artistically inclined students.
“We have a really positive and welcoming community in which all types of people are welcome to come in and have fun making art- anyone who has taken/is taking one art class can join no matter what you make or when you join!” said Jones.
