Every year, Watauga High School continually strives to make school exciting for students. Our cafeteria workers always have the well-being and health of students in mind and want to make sure they feel alert and prepared for the day, especially in the early morning. For the 2023-2024 year, the cafeteria has introduced a new and interesting part of the breakfast menu: the Moo Brew.
“We’re now offering a coffee in the morning: the Moo Brew,” Tabitha Watson, the Cafeteria Manager of Watauga High School, said. “If kids want something to prepare them for the school day, a good cup of coffee is a great way to get the morning going. We’re offering them with the normal breakfast food for $3.”
The name “Moo Brew” comes from the process used to create it. In a 16-ounce cup (provided by the cafeteria), students add coffee, two pumps of flavored syrup, and milk. They stir, then add ice until the cup is full. The coffee serving itself is around two fluid ounces, which, on average, contains twenty milligrams of caffeine. This level is just enough to wake up the drinker without making them feel jittery or over-excited, perfect for warding off any early-morning grogginess before classes begin.
“The milk we serve in the cafeteria, which we use in the Moo Brew, has a lot of protein and calcium,” Watson said. “Using milk in your coffee is a great way to get those important nutrients throughout the day or before going into the school day.”
The company that provides the coffee portion of the Moo Brew, the Dairy Alliance, states that using milk in coffee has many nutritional benefits, as it provides up to eight grams of protein per serving. They offer multiple syrups to add in addition to the espresso shot and milk, offering the buyer flavors like caramel and vanilla.
The coffee has a creamy smoothness to it thanks to the added milk, and since it has a kick of caffeine, it’s a great way to wake yourself up early in the morning. Its availability in the school is convenient and cost-efficient.
“There’s been a lot of buzz around the new coffee and a lot of demand to have us offer it throughout the day,” Watson said. “By the end of the first semester, I’m hoping to start offering the Moo Brew in the cafeteria at lunch too.”
