Chasing Leaves - Poem By Lauren Peviani

You used to tell me,

If I caught a leaf falling from a tree,

We could make a wish, just you and me.

I’d stretch my fingers, look to the sky,

Chasing each leaf that twirled on high.

Some slipped, some landed near,

And you would laugh, your voice so clear.

I’d whisper to you that my biggest wish was to fly,

And in my dreams I was already soaring high.

Your eyes would soften with a knowing look,

As if you’d already packed wings for me inside of my coat.

The next leaf I caught felt so light,

Like a promise that fell from the sky.

You exclaimed that I could with for anything at all,

So I wished for endless days of fall.

And you smiled, because you knew,

All that I wanted was to spend more time with you.

More moments shared under that October sky,

Learning that love is the reason leaves fly.
