"Catching Fire"

delicately touched by an invisible match,

the leaves begin to burn.

maples:

instantly engulfed into a fiery red

a phoenix eager

to become ash.

oaks:

gone gently into that good night

toasted brown leaves dancing

through a foggy sky.

birch: yellow flames singe

the frail green that clings desperately

to streaking veins,

the evening rain setting them free

the autumn setting them alight

may it be death

but this is their only chance to fly.
