The C&D Club had their first meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 20th. This is their flyer!
Senior Devin Estep has been a fan of tabletop games for a long time, and now he wants to provide a space for OG fans to hang out and new admirers to jump in with the Cards and Dragons Tabletop Gaming Club (the C&D Club, for short).
“We want to have it so people who are interested in this can jump into a group and start learning,” Estep says. “And so that people who are already comfortable with this can get together and start setting up meetings.
Before he could start meetings, Estep had to get the club officially approved by the WHS Administration.
“First of all, all you need to do is go to the front office for a club form. Really simple,” he said. “The problem comes with filling out that form. When you need to fill it out, you need a club sponsor, or a teacher who’s willing to sponsor that club. That’s the hardest part of it all.”
Teachers are busy balancing their personal lives, their work schedules, and sometimes other clubs they are involved in, so it’s often hard to set up good times to meet with students about adding more responsibilities. For the most part, though, teachers are happy to respond when students reach out. The C&D Club’s teacher sponsor is Dr. Scott Evans.
“Once you have the teacher, the paperwork is really easy,” Estep said. “From that, you just need a whole lot of numbers from people who are going to be part of the club.”
Since the club was officially approved on October 12, Estep needs people to know what the club is about and attend meetings. He doesn't want to only include the popular RPG Dungeons and Dragons, but other games similar to that as well. Currently, Estep and a few other members of the C&D Club have a discord server up and running. They are working on setting up an Instagram account.
“If enough people are interested, we want to do other tabletop games like Warhammer, or trading card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, and Magic: The Gathering, where people can get together and do these small battles,” Estep said.
Since these “normal battles” can easily take up to an hour to complete, the C&D Club plans to have a revised version of the rules to keep things simple and moving fast. Their other games can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete, so it’s a rather large time commitment. They also plan to have meetings twice a week, on Mondays after school until 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays before school at 7:45 a.m. in room 3506.
“If someone wants to contact me, they could contact me by email. My school email is estdev0808@wataugaschools.org,” Estep said. “They could also talk to Dr. Evans and they could probably get some information out of him.”
