The success of the Watauga Women’s Basketball Team in their 2023-2024 season can be attributed to the outstanding vigor and commitment of its coaches and players. Charlotte Torgerson, a senior member of the team, reflects on her journey to 1000 points during the season and her commitment to Christopher Newport University.

The Watauga Women’s Basketball team ended their outstanding season in the 4A state semifinal playoff game held in Winston Salem on Thursday, March 14. Leading up to this thrilling game, Torgerson reflects on her monumental achievements throughout her last season at Watauga. During her final season, she scored her 1000 point and solidified her commitment to CNU.

“This season has absolutely been special, not just because it is my senior year, but because of all we accomplished. We made it to the final four of the state playoffs and it was incredible to see the support from the community,” Torgerson said. “When the season ended, it was definitely bittersweet, but I'll never forget the love and support the school and community showed us.”

Torgerson has fostered her love of the game of basketball since elementary school, contributing to her success throughout her high school career. She credits her dad, Coach Bill Torgerson, for her drive and commitment to growth.

“I remember being in second or third grade and shooting with my dad in our driveway. He is who first introduced me to the sport and has helped me to foster my love for it. He has coached me on my middle school team, many of my travel teams, and one last time as my high school coach this year,” said Torgerson. “Having him be my coach when I reached this milestone meant a lot to me because it was a reward for all the time and work we have both put in.”

Her steadfast dedication to both travel and school teams has allowed Torgerson to continue her basketball career through college. Her enthusiasm as she embarks on this journey showcases her passion for the game.

“I always thought that people exaggerated when they said, ‘When you know, you'll know,’ but as soon as I finished my first visit to CNU, I knew it was the place where I wanted to spend the next four years,” she said. “When talking with the coaches and players, they made me feel like part of their family. Also, the campus is beautiful and the basketball program itself is very competitive and respected.”

Reflecting on her numerous years of basketball experience, Torgerson states that her love of the game has brought her some of her best memories and closest relationships.

“Basketball has given me some of my very best friends, both in and out of a basketball setting. We play so well together and root for each other, because of our relationships off of the court,” said Torgerson. “Not only that, but the connections you make with college coaches, your coaches, and people in the community, because of whatever sport you play, are so special and people that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.”
