Plummer and his dog Telli
Mac Plummer is a junior at Watauga High School. Plummer primarily works with watercolor but also dabbles in other art forms including digital and mixed media pieces. Plummer uses art as a form of expression, letting his pieces speak for him when words fail.
“Art has been a form of therapy for me. A way I can get my feelings and thoughts out without having to explain them verbally. When my friend passed I used art to work through the grief and pain,” said Plummer.
Plummer finds inspiration for his art in everyday life. The experiences that shape him and the people that he meets are what help drive his creation. Plummer has always been creative but he found his connection to art solidified by his 8th grade art teacher.
“I was always in love with the idea of creating, but what really pushed me to fall into the world of art was my eighth grade art teacher, she taught me that there was no 'bad' way to create or express yourself,” said Plummer.
Unnamed, Watercolor, 1st Sustained Investigation of Grief and Loss
The above piece by Mac Plummer is a representation of the suffering, sadness, and longing, for a person that is permanently gone.
“I lost my best friend in December 2021. Since then I have dedicated myself to learning and expressing everything I can about grief and loss,” said Plummer.
Art is an essential part of Plummer’s life; he uses it as a form of expression but also as an outlet for emotions that can otherwise be difficult to process. Creating is something anyone can do, but to Plummer the process is what makes a piece. The thought and work that goes into every detail is what makes the final product so special.
“The thing with handmade art is every single detail is thought about in excruciating depth, to the point where it drives a lot of us insane," said Plummer. "But the thinking that goes into art is what makes art in the first place. That tiny idea could turn into a masterpiece, all you have to do is start."
