Autumn Gardner, a senior and skilled fiber artist at Watauga High School, is our artist of the week.
Gardner learned to crochet in elementary school. Her previous knowledge of knitting inspired her to pick up the similar craft, and it stuck.
“After learning the basics of crocheting through the after-school club, I continued to teach myself how to make larger and more advanced projects,” said Gardner. “I love to freehand projects, meaning I make things without the help of a pattern or tutorial, and each year I seem to gather new skills that help me make more intricate projects.”
The skills that Gardner learned have allowed her to make many intricate pieces from blankets to clothes.
“My absolute favorite thing I’ve ever made was a lace pattern burgundy dress for my best friend,” said Gardner. “It was made from the shoulders down to a full-length skirt, and the sleeves were added last. The lace pattern was an 8-row repeat, so after doing it once or twice I had the pattern memorized and was able to make the dress rather quickly.”
Gardner’s artistic abilities are not limited to crochet, either.
“I take part in a plethora of art forms, including knitting, sewing and quilting, cross stitching, pottery, and painting using multiple mediums,” said Gardner. “Other than crocheting, my favorite medium would be pottery. I just really love the process of creating, no matter what the medium or the final product is.”
A talented and versatile student artist, Gardner exemplifies the value of enjoying the process as much as the result.
“I intend to crochet until my hands stop working. It would be amazing if I could make a career out of it, or at least find a way to sell what I make,” said Gardner.
