"Apple Trees"-a poem by Bella Battern

Dear trees,

I love all of you.

You give us air and are something beautiful to see.

When I look around me,

I’m honored to see how you sway in the wind,

without a care, but also how you're as still as a stubborn cat.

But to apple trees in particular,

I think I may like you a bit more.

It’s not that you have the best fruit or that you're the tallest,

But it’s the way you always look so gentle and beautiful,

In the beginning,

in your prime time,

and when you're rotting.

You never fail to be a friendly face,

And a whisper in the silence.

A piece in the world that never changes,

Always having a small surprise for me.

The apples are the prize, but the tree itself is a game

Having to climb to get the best one.
