Every year, Lenoir Rhyne, a nationally recognized liberal arts university located in Hickory, NC, offers many scholarships to make higher education accessible. Watauga High School seniors Anna McGuire and Keo Arguello successfully received full ride scholarships to Lenoir Rhyne University to further their academic careers.

In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must be ambitious and involved in their community. Many students who receive these scholarships are good at balancing their academic career, athletic career, and social life.

“I am involved in the National Honors Society, Manos Unidas club, and the previous years I participated in several JROTC community service events,” said McGuire.

Applying for this scholarship opens many doors for academically dedicated students. An opportunity within this scholarship is applying for Fritz Honors College, which is a new program that helps students get the best education possible. Not only were McGuire and Arguello accepted into the Honors College, they qualified to be Presidential Scholars.

“Since we're Presidential Scholars and the first class to be able to graduate from the [Honors] College, we will work with many others to further develop the honors program,” Arguello said. “The Fritz Honors College allows us to have the very best education possible while not having to worry about cost thanks to our scholarship.”

In order to receive this scholarship, McGuire and Arguello had to write impressive essays and interview with admissions officers at Lenoir Rhyne. These are some of the main factors that decide a student's acceptance.

The interview went into depth about our goals and service to the community,” said McGuire.

This scholarship will provide a variety of opportunities for McGuire and Arguello as they further their education and career. They are allowed to grow at Lenoir Rhyne and become the best students they can be.

“This will benefit me by not having to worry as much about the financial side of gaining my education,” McGuire said. “It will allow me to fully prepare for my life after college without being in educational debt.”

This university sets students up to have a successful future while encouraging them to follow their dreams. Arguello has a very big dream that he believes he can now pursue.

“I plan to go to medical school to pursue a career in neurology, get my doctoral degree in psychology, and get a Ph.D. in philosophy before serving in the Navy for a little while,” Arguello said. “After that, I will become a teacher of psychology and neurology.”

During college, these students do not plan to let up on their academics and extracurriculars. They plan to increase the amount of rigor they have already pursued through Watauga High School.

“My goals are to maintain the highest GPA possible, start new clubs, play soccer on the men's team, and help develop the school that has already gotten me so much further,” Arguello said. “I would also love to study abroad in other countries to help me grow while seeing new cultures. I want to be able to understand people more, and Lenoir is offering me that more than any other place I have seen.”
