Brandon Winbush was awarded a generous check for his classroom on September 17, along with Ashley Tate, another Watauga County School teacher. The checks were written for $1,000.
“I woke up, had a piece of toast, and went down to King Street,” said Winbush. “Pretty normal start to the day”.
While Winbush went into this festive Saturday unaware of his achievement, he was aware of the feature on the popular special College Game Day. However, Winbush insists the achievement was not only for him, but also his students.
“It was a great feeling because I think people recognized hard work being done and not just by me but by my students,” said Winbush.
Dr. Scott Elliott, superintendent of Watauga County Schools, recognized the dedication of Winbush and his students and decided to do something about it.
“Dr. Elliott was the one who actually submitted the form of that honor,” said Winbush. “I think that this really is more than recognition. This is a community that we built from the kind of hard work that we do.”
The money will be used to support the choral department and piano classroom and the replacement of materials like stands, choir folders, and overall aging equipment.
