WHS Students Share Their Creativity at Second Open Mic Night

Watauga High School held its second open mic night of the school year on Friday, April 21 allowing students an outlet to express themselves and their creativity in a public setting. The event, which was open to all students wishing to present, took place at 4:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, where students took an opportunity to do everything from read poetry to perform songs.

One of the students who presented at the open mic night was freshman Mitch Jasper who read aloud a poem.

“I shared a poem I wrote myself about a situation that happened to me a few weeks ago that I kind of used my emotion to write about,” Jasper said.

Like many other students Jasper used the open mic night as a way to express himself and his feelings.

“My friend told me to sign up for open mic night and I did,” Jasper said, “I really didn’t have a specific thing to do in mind so I thought, ‘Maybe I’m angry about this, maybe I should write a poem,’ and I did.”

Among students who participated in the event there was a general feeling of reward afterwards.

“It was very nerve wracking. It was the first time I’ve done basically anything on stage. It felt great though. I feel like a lot more people should do it because I almost didn’t really know that it was even happening,” Jasper added.

While no more open mic nights have been publicly planned or announced for the remainder of the school year, returning students interested in participating next year should keep on the lookout for any news regarding future events.
