If you’re looking for an enjoyable and social way to get involved at school, WHS Book Club is for you. Open to new members, WHS Book Club is a space where students can read good books, drink good tea, and make new friends.
Founded this year, WHS Book Club meets every other Monday in Ms. Lord’s room (3128). Founder and president of WHS Book Club, freshman Rebecca Billette, wanted to create the club so she and her friends could read and discuss the same books.
“I’ve always loved to read,” said Billette. “I noticed that [my friends] also like to read and said, 'Hey, do you want to read together?' We just wanted to read the same book together.”
Every month, the WHS Book club reads one book from genres ranging from mystery to fantasy. All members of the club can recommend books and everyone votes for which book will be read that month.
“As a group, I think we’re pretty big fans of fantasy and dystopian fiction,” said freshman Edie Berke, Co-Secretary of the
Rebecca Billette, WHS Book Club president. club. "We'll ask each other questions
about the book, they range from deep questions to the character situation or the character themselves.”
During meetings, members of the WHS Book club can enjoy hot tea, treats, and a sense of community.
“We get to have tea and treats,” said Billette. “We’re all friends, we have a really great community.”
The next meeting for the WHS Book Club will be Jan. 23 at 3:30 in room 3128.

“I think a lot of times students really love reading when they're little and then in high school, we lose our love of reading because we're reading a lot of assignments, it feels like we're just reading becomes work instead of play,” said club advisor and English teacher Blakely Lord. “The Book Club brings back that playfulness and the communal nature of reading, and I think the benefit is that it's fun to read, just for enjoyment without the pressure of it being an assignment.”
