This semester, Watauga High School has welcomed an interim teacher in one of the chemistry classes. An interim teacher fills the position of a teacher who is unable to teach their classes due to a medical leave or resignation. Jackie Blow received her bachelor’s degree in Science Education from the University of Oklahoma and was born and raised in Alaska.
As of now, Blow will be the interim teacher until the permanent chemistry teacher position is filled. Blow has subbed for classes many times throughout the school year at WHS and has taken a liking to teaching here.
“I really grew to love the students in the class,” said Blow. “When the spot became available, I jumped at the opportunity!”
Blow said she loves the mountains and hiking trails in Boone. This is what drew her and her family to the area.
“We lived in Texas for 14 years before moving here in June of 2020,” said Blow. “I love basketball and spending time with my 4 kids.”
While she hasn’t been in the classroom in the last few years, she’s excited to be back and at Watauga High School to fulfill the interim position.
“Teaching science is my favorite thing,” said Blow. “Chemistry is awesome because it involves some pretty cool experiments and plenty of math.”
Blow has impressed students with her knowledge and dedication.
“She’s a hands-on teacher whose encouragement can push you to do better,” said sophomore Lillian Smith, a student of Blow’s.
Although she is only a substitute teacher for the time being, she’s known to write creative and effective lesson plans that students enjoy.
“Watauga has been an incredible place to work,” Blow said. “I have felt so welcomed and supported by my fellow teachers and administration. The students are the best of the best!”
