Spring is here, and so is Watauga’s annual plant sale. The plant sale will be held this Friday, May 5 from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the greenhouse at Watauga High School. If there are leftovers they will be sold Saturday from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30.p.m. The students in the Agriculture classes plant and maintain all of the plants for the sale.
At the sale, there will be a wide variety of annuals, perennials, succulents, and hanging baskets.
Students dedicate much of their class time to the greenhouse to make the sale come together. They handle plants and arrange the baskets. Students use their skills learned in class in the greenhouse.
“Working in the greenhouse is physical work,” said Vivica Saufley, a sophomore in Animal Science. “Being in class is sitting in class just trying to understand. In the greenhouse, people participate in things and you get to see progress. Students enjoy getting to spend time in the greenhouse, and it is educational.”
Working in the greenhouse allows for application of what's been learned in the classroom.
“I feel like doing physical work in the greenhouse keeps students more involved, and helps the students that learn tactically,” said sophomore Kasity Coffey. “I like working in the greenhouse better because it keeps me awake and focused on what we are learning.”
“Students learn real world skills. Core classes teach you academic skills. Agriculture classes teach you working habits and skills,” said agriculture department teacher Ms. Bare. “These skills require more than reading books or instructions. The curriculum for animal science or horticulture are things you have to do, in order to fully grasp the concepts.”
