Watauga High School’s swim season began on October 30. After winning many meets and having an exceptional season last year, the swim team is ready for another year of exceeding expectations and exceptional team building.

The last season was very successful, with many swimmers reaching new goals and swimming personal best times. Lauren Patterson, a senior at Watauga, was even able to compete at states.

Michael Makdad is a sophomore who has been a part of the Watauga swim team for two years.

“Both mens’ and womens’ teams secured first place in the conference with a large lead above the other teams,” says Makdad. “Watauga gained over 100 points, scoring us first place.”

This year, the team is excited to welcome new members and set new goals for the season.

“As an individual, I hope to place in the top three at the state level,” Patterson said. “As a team, I hope we can win conference again!”

Of course, with a new season comes new changes from past years to create an overall better experience. Annabelle Stewart is a junior on the team and is also a part of club swim.

“I think there might be a team for just swimmers who want to swim at practice and not compete,” said Stewart. “This could draw a lot more swimmers to the team.”

While there are new changes and improvements this year, there are obstacles that accompany any season, especially for Stewart, who is currently overcoming a leg injury.

“For me, an obstacle is my knee. I am recovering from MPFL reconstruction surgery,” said Stewart. “My motion in my right leg is very limited.”

Newcomers also face obstacles as they work to find their place and learn a new, difficult sport.

“The new swimmers just need to get comfortable,” said Patterson. “But we are a really encouraging team, so we will always help newbies in any way we can.”

As the team tackles obstacles, large numbers, and personal goals, supportive coaches and teammates are vital.

“The support from the coaches creates such an encouraging environment where everyone can thrive and perform at their best,” Patterson said.

All of the amazing coaching the team receives will continue to shape wonderful swimmers. This year, they have added new swimmers that will bring amazing skills to the season.

“Addison Wilson and Tessa Buchanan are two new faces to the team,” Makdad explains. “Addison has exceptional work ethic [and] Tessa is extremely energetic. You should also look out for Silas Powell. He showed a lot of improvement over the summer on the county swim team.”

With the new changes, amazing coaches, and a hardworking team, Watauga Swim will be set up for success in the 2023-24 season.

“I want this team to thrive in and out of water,” Patterson said. “This team has amazing relationships and we are a strong group. This team is more than just swimming, and that makes it extremely special.
