This past week, Watauga High School's HOSA team went to the state championship. Watauga students won state titles in their respective categories, giving them a place in the national championship that is happening in Dallas from June 21 to 24.
Five Watauga students attended the state championship and placed highly. Junior Sarah Greene and Junior Hailey Harmon placed first as partners in the CPR and First Aid category. This category consisted of a written test involving a multitude of topics relating to CPR and First Aid, and a second component that is skill based.
“Me and my partner Hailey competed in CPR/First Aid, which contained a written test on anatomy and physiology, CPR, first aid, and natural disasters," Greene said. "The next part of the competition was a skill-based competition, this consisted of one partner doing first aid on a patient and the other partner doing CPR/BLS on an unresponsive patient."
Grayson Elliott, another member of the HOSA team who went to the state championship, placed first in the research poster competition. As well as the previous competition the poster contest consisted of two separate judgings.
“The competition required me to create a poster that both analyzed prior research and utilized data I had collected,” said Elliot. “The competition consisted of two sections, with the first being a pre-judged section, where the judges scored my poster. The second section provided me the opportunity to give a four minute, brief presentation that built upon the information of my poster. I was fortunate enough to place first out of approximately fifty other competitors.”
Due to their sweeping victory at the state championship, the Watauga High School HOSA team has now been invited to compete this June in Dallas, Texas for a chance to win a national title.
“I really enjoyed being able to have this experience with an amazing group of people and meeting new friends along the way,” said Harmon. “We are so excited to be heading to internationals, but even being able to compete and use all the training that has happened was an amazing experience.”
The state competition provided HOSA students with the opportunity to compete at a high level and showcase their skills.
“I really enjoyed the fact that the competition was at a high level because it pushed us to be the very best that we could be,” said Greene.
