WHS baseball is off to a hot start to the beginning of this season, garnering statewide recognition for its early success. With their 11-3 overall record and their players' top 5 statistics in North Carolina, they have even received rankings as high as fourth in the state for baseball athletics.
Johnny Ray (sophomore) is currently top ten in the state for home runs (4) and second in the 3A/4A division, only behind his own teammate, Tristan Salinas (senior).
“The strength of our baseball team is definitely our at-bats. We have some pretty good hitters on the team and we do some damage,” said Ray.

Watauga Baseball will have eight games to finish off the regular season with the hopes of making a deep push in the 4A playoffs. The team plans to build its already-loaded resume by playing teams such as South Caldwell and Alexander Central, which is ranked 32nd in the state for baseball.
“ I expect us to go as far as we can even though we’re losing some seniors this year will continue to do our best to put in hard work,” said Ray.
The team will play North Buncombe High School on Monday to extend their win streak to two. The attention on Watauga baseball is positive and genuine, they are putting up numbers that could compete with anyone in the state. Its all a matter of if the team can keep up the pace.
