Top Gun vs. Top Gun: Maverick: A Review by Alyssa Graham and Bridget Flaherty

Top Gun: Maverick has ranked 5th in all-time box office domestic sales.

You may have heard about a movie that recently came out, Top Gun: Maverick. This is a sequel to the original famous 80s movie, Top Gun. This sequel gained popularity quickly and had extremely good ratings. One question that we have is, which movie is better?

The original Top Gun, created by Jim Cash Jack Epps Jr., is a well- known movie from 1986 and cost $15 million dollars to make. It is based on a military program called Top Gun where some of the best pilots in the world learn to fly on dangerous missions.

In the original film, Maverick (Tom Cruise) gets into the program with his partner Goose (Anthony Edwards) where they go against all odds and train for dangerous missions. The film was not as suspenseful and action packed as Top Gun: Maverick, but it still takes you on an emotional rollercoaster from excitement to sadness.

In terms of the original 1980’s version, the actors were the perfect people to play these roles, and the idea that they base the movie on more than just one mission is brilliantly thought out. However it has some controversial parts of the movie. Modern viewers watching the dialogue from the 1980s version may not appreciate how Maverick (Tom Cruise) would talk to women and how disrespectful he was. This behavior is obviously not accepted in today's society, not to mention that there were no women pilots in the original movie.

When Top Gun: Maverick first came to theaters we were both very excited to see it. Even without seeing the original Top Gun first, both of us were able to follow the plot very well and loved the movie. This thrilling sequel was about a former navy pilot (Tom Cruise) who gets sent back to his old academy, Top Gun, to train young pilots to go on a dangerous, nearly impossible mission.

It is hard to compare the two movies because both movies are great for their time and everyone has different opinions. Some moviegoers like the originals and others like sequels and remakes.

Overall both movies are well made and worth your time, but in our opinion Top Gun: Maverick is our favorite out of the two because of the suspense and story line. We liked how intense some of the scenes were and that there was the original conflict between Rooster and Maverick. The conflict between Rooster and Maverick came from events that occurred in the first movie, like when Rooster’s dad, Goose, passed away while Maverick was with him.

We definitely recommend that you watch both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick because they are great movies.
